Irving Penn
Irving Penn
The artist i chose was Irving Penn, he was born on June 16, 1917. He was born in Plainfield,New Jersey and died October 7, 2009 at age 92. Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. In his time there he studied drawings, paintings, graphics and industrial art under Alexey Brodovitch. Penn also work under Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar. Penn had been primarily known for his work in fashion, he had worked as an associate for the Vogue magazine art department. His main subjects of work were mainly people due to career in fashion photography. i Chose this artist because i thought i his pictures were the ones i could emulate the best.
The top two photos above, show my emulations of an Irving Penn photo. The first picture shown is a picture that i took of my friend Mitchell Garrant, at the school. While the bottom photo is Penn's own photo he took himself. This photo does follow the rule of thirds I believe. I would say due to the blank background the main focal point of the photo is Mitchell himself. The picture had been taken vertically. The direction is effective because that is originally how this picture was taken. This photo id say creates a weird, creepy mood considering its just a black and white picture of a man in a suit. But the fact that you can not see his face, and its covered with a piece of paper type thing, its alters the mood completely.
